Situation

Castagnola is located on the southern slopes of Brè. In 1972 the merger between Lugano, Castagnola and Brè was a free choice of citizens of the three former Municipalities which began to envision a future administrative and organisational homogeneous and inspired a more global and dynamic problems. A change of perspective implemented in safeguarding and respecting the different entities were part of the new municipality. An important principle, endorsed by the 1991 Plan (section Castagnola and Brè). With this merger, the municipality of Lugano has been enriched with an area of outstanding scenic, voted to residential and leisure time. Remember the public importance of the area of the Campus Martius, South and North, and Lido in Cassarate, State of the "Casserum" with the present Parco di San Michele, the territories of Cortivo and San Domenico, il Parco degli Ulivi, along the romantic path leads to Gandria, cantine and grottos of Caprino and the ex-quarry Ronchetti. An area of leisure of citizens for whom there is a development of its primary function. No less important are cultural-historical presences such as Villa Favorita and his collection, now housed in 1989 Heleneum Museum of cultures and the casa Carlo Cattaneo today seat of the historical archives of the city. The building of the old town hall was transformed into the center of the neighborhood and has, in addition to administrative offices, multi-purpose halls available to various companies, exhibition spaces and a large hall for meetings and conferences.
